Very little in life is unexpected if one pays attention. As such, you'd think more people would prepare. What's perverse is that in our society (meaning the West), preparation is seen as a bad thing for society. Imagine the chaos if people socked away 10% of their income for a rainy day. What's even more perverse is how such preparation is almost punished. Spend, spend spend! say our political overlords, hoping to gin up a 'recovery' before election time. It seems rates of personal and medical bankruptcy are immaterial. It's sad. It's actually bad money in this economy to keep money in a savings account. The average return on passbook savings is under 1%. My checking account pays 3.6%! I'm stupid to go set up a savings account. I'm going to do it anyway, but it's still kinda dumb.
